A break in the routine

A lot of things have happened in the last two weeks. Some good, some terrible, but I survived.

Character development for the game is still under way. With the different time zones its difficult to get everyone together. That hasn’t stopped progress yet.

On the writing side, its been slow. I’ve edited some essays and typed a script up for my job. Nothing too exciting. I decided not to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo. There was just too much going on this month.

Took a trip to the hospital last week. Hence the lack of a post. I’m alright. Just some bruising and scraps. A bit of a scare but it passed. It was a major inconveiance to say the least.

I did go to Austin and San Antonio. That was fun. Played ina soccer game and, as someone who doesn’t do heavy conditioning/ exercise, it wasn’t bad. We did loose. Those PT athletes are no joke. But it was fun.

Lastly, I’m going to a convention this weekend. It’s not for writing though. It’s for a hobby of sorts. I wanted the right to say that I’ve been to an anime convention at least once in my life. Plus, I’m really looking forward to seeing all the cosplay costumes and just enjoying the experience. It’s a break in the routine. Something to do and get out of the house. Possible pictures to come.

When the Excitement Leaves

(if I had a lot of friends who are writers)

There was some progress this week regarding one of my stories on Wattpad. This particular story has been in and out of my head for a while now. While it is published on Wattpad, its taken me a long time to upload new chapters. It’s not like the story has stop being interesting but sometimes I’m not sure how to procede forward.

Perhaps this is poor planning on my part. However, there are times where I plan stories out detail by detail and all the excitement just leaves me. It was as if writing a detail outline had somehow substituted the need of writing it out on paper.

It sort of sounds like an excuse but that’s the only way I can explain it. It’s probably the reason why I have multiple side stories I jump to on occassion. It’s one way for me to keep the excitement of the main story that I’m working on. Sometimes I don’t always write other stories. I turn on my console and start binge playing a game or sometimes I just binged on a T.V. show. It depends on my mood.

The most important thing for me ia that at least I don’t abandon a story midway. Sure it takes a long time but I finish it. With this particular Wattpad story and even with all my other stories, I hope to one day finish them. It’s part of my yeay goals dor myself.

Early Year Accomplishments

318093a6c0732513e5aac1dba5fd352cIt’s not really a secret – I think – that I haven’t been reading as much as I should. However, that has changed. I didn’t make any New Year’s Resolution or anything like that. My goal, as ever, is to keep writing and working on my books. Perhaps its because I hadn’t found a book that I really liked or sucked me in but good news is that I found some. Well, two to be exact.

It’s not like I went out to buy any new books. I had bought them before (a few months ago) and only now got to read them. Turns out, it was a good idea to look through my kindle and bookcase. Now, I won’t go into a review of each book but I would just like to say that I am proud of myself. I managed to finish two books in less than two weeks.

That still doesn’t beat my record of reading four books over two days but I think it’s progress. Besides, who doesn’t need a small pat on the back once in a while? I hope to continue my streak of reading and I’m currently working towards reading a third book this year. I don’t want to make it my goal to read every book on my kindle and the four books I recently bought at half-price books but I do intend to read a lot more than I have.

I’ve mentioned that I had stopped reading because I had spent all my undergraduate years reading for school and it took the fun out of it. Or maybe I didn’t but that’s the case. Yes, I know. Its a poor excuse. However, I do plan on reading those four paperbacks that I bought and more of the books on my kindle. While it won’t be a goal, it’ll be somewhat similar. I want to form a habit of sort and if I treat reading like something that I have to do then it won’t be fun and I won’t follow through.

Plus, I told my concerned BF that ‘No, I’m not planning to stop working on my books. I’m doing research.’ Reading is research. Because, these authors are published and if I can absorb their techniques into my own writing then they’re doing something right and I want to be part of that.

On top of it all, I forgot how fun it was to read. Scary, right? I don’t use reading as an escape, not really. It’s more like exploring new worlds and meeting new people. It’s amazing and I’m glad I got back into it again. I have high hopes of getting back into reading a lot more than I have.

Wish me luck.

P.S. The books I read are: The Keepers (Alchemy Series) by Donna Augustine and Blood Blade (Skinners) by Marcus Pelegrimas

Life as an Experience – Take 2

I’ve talked about using life experiences as a reference for writing before. This piece of advice is still relevant to myself. Yesterday, I had an engagement that took all my afternoon, evening, and part of my night. To tell the truth, I had only seen bridal showers in movies and on television. Let me tell you it was everything that I expected it to be. I won’t go into more details because, well, there’s no need really.

At least I can use this experience in my writing. I think I have a character in me who is getting married. If not then it’ll make a really interesting short story or flash fiction piece. Honestly, I think most if not all of what happens in life can be used in writing.
